About the Porsche 911 Carrera 996

Production: 1997–2004
Cylinders: 6
Powertrain: Combustion

The Porsche 911 Carrera 996, produced from 1997 to 2006, marks the fifth generation of the iconic 911 lineup and was a significant shift for the model with its water-cooled engine, departing from the traditional air-cooled design. Approximately 175,000 units were produced worldwide across various trims, making it one of the more accessible generations for collectors, though specific variants remain rare. The base Carrera featured a 3.4-liter flat-six engine, later upgraded to 3.6 liters, delivering between 296 and 320 horsepower depending on the model year. Performance highlights include a 0-60 mph time of around 5 seconds for the Carrera and a top speed nearing 174 mph.

For exotic car collectors, the 996 offers intrigue with limited editions like the Carrera 4S and the 40th Anniversary Edition (2004), which are sought after for their unique styling and performance tweaks. While initially less favored due to its design changes, the 996 has seen rising value in recent years, particularly for well-maintained, low-mileage examples and rare variants like the GT3. Its historical significance lies in bridging Porsche’s classic era with modern engineering, making it a pivotal model in the 911’s evolution.
